Between sessions of conference Rachel and Miriam helped me make some applesauce to fill our little reusable pouches. It's super easy! Sure, step one is "have a baby 10+ years ago so they can do all the work and you don't have to," and the next step is "spend a literal lifetime turning that child into a useful human being," but once you complete those two steps, making applesauce is a breeze!
The girls washed and cut all the apples and boiled them down. I vrrrrr'd them up (this is the technical term) with our vrrrrrrr-er (also a technical term (the non-technical term, I believe, is immersion blender)). Then we filled our pouches with piping hot applesauce, let them cool, and then popped them in the freezer for later consumption.
One 5 lbs. bag of apples (plus a few strays from other apple collections) yielded 18 pouches with (+/-) 7 oz. in each pouch. That's 126 oz. of applesauce for a total cost of approximately $5! Plus there was enough applesauce left over for everyone to eat as much as they wanted (Alexander had five (baby-sized) bowls of applesauce and the other kids weren't going easy on it, either).
Those squeeze pouches you can get at the store are about $10 for 20 3.2 oz pouches of applesauce (so 64 total ounces of applesauce). Making your own is clearly the better deal (0.04 cents per ounce vs. 6.5 cents per ounce, I think. Unless I'm doing my math wrong, which, like, honestly...it's a possibility) and it's really not too labour intensive if you put all your kids to work.
They're the ones who are going to eat it, anyway.
