First foods

The other day Zoë was fussing in her exersaucer but I was busy (I occasionally try to do things like laundry and stuff) so I left her there for a few minutes. When I finished what I was doing I went to pick her up crooning, "What's wrong, baby? Are you hungry? Do you want to eat?"

"No! Don't feed her again!" Benjamin commanded.

"What do you mean 'again?'" I asked. "It's been a few hours since she last ate. She's probably hungry again."

"She's not!" he insisted. "I already fed her!"

"What?!" I asked. "What did you feed her?"

"Paper!" he beamed. "She loves it!"

So the list of random first (non-)foods continues: leaves, wild onion, paper...

Then last night I was eating dinner with Zoë on my lap when she hijacked my fork, quickly diverting it to her mouth rather than mine. She sucked that piece of cantaloupe dry and enjoyed every second of it; she was rather furious when I took it away.

She had a death grip on this fork and did not part with it willingly

Introducing solids was part of the plan for November, after all Zoë is coming up on six months, but she's so anxious about starting to eat that we might be formally introducing foods sooner rather than later (my plan was to wait until exactly six months). I can't believe it's time for this already...

Also, Benjamin has trouble remembering the names of more seasonal fruits. He's good with apples and bananas, even oranges (because that's such an obvious name), but beyond that he gets confused. Peaches? Pears? Those are basically the same thing, right? Don't even ask him to differentiate between peaches and nectarines.

Anyway, cantaloupe were only 99¢ each on Saturday (Is that a good price? It seemed like a good price.) so we got one (obviously) and cut it up for dinner (obviously).

Benjamin peeked in the bowl and said, "Yes! Pineapple! I love pineapple!"

"That's not pineapple," I said.

"Oh," he said. "That's...that's...that's...cantaloupe without a ladder!"

The whole entire meal he asked for "canta-ope-wissou-a-adda," as if that were the proper name of the fruit.

  1. So, a few random comments. I read the first anecdote to Dad, and he said, "Chapstick, anyone?"

And Heidi bought the most gorgeous RED PEARS for the offering basket for the gamelan performance--they were so, so beautiful. I don't know what they tasted like, though...

Last...I hated cantelope when I was a kid...because I thought that CANTELOPE and ANTELOPE were the SAME THING. I was not about to eat those cute little animals, bounding across the prairie. I cannot explain how my brain could make that round, ball-like fruit seem the same as those long-legged critters...but does the skin not look kind of like SKIN? I submit that it does.

    1. Chapstick. Hehehe. Kids are resilient, aren't they? :D (For the record, Josie LOVED it!)

Not only does the skin look skin-like, but the meat looks meat-like, don't you think?

  2. She is starting to look more and more like Miriam...I'm just saying ;) Can't believe she is old enough to eat solids already. That is crazy!
