Yesterday we discussed Halloween festivities during family home evening because all of a sudden Halloween is right around the corner. Part of me feels like it should be so far away. The other part of me knows that we have our neighbourhood Halloween party on Saturday.
"If you need anything for your costume that you don't have already, I need to know about it this week," I said.
"I need a bow!" Miriam said.
"Yes, you do, but first you need to find your headband."
"I just had it yesterday! Benjamin..."
"Don't blame Benjamin; you left it out. But we'll find it in time, I'm sure. And then I'll put a bow on it. Anyone else?"
"Zoë doesn't have a costume," Rachel said.
"Zoë does have a costume," I said. "I made ears for her this afternoon. And I found a blouse for you to wear, Rachel, so I think that's the last part of your costume."
"Yup. I already have my psychic paper!"
"Great. And, Benjamin, Sister Adamson said she has some material to make a ghost costume if you still want to be a ghost."
"No, I don't want to be a ghost. I want to be a..."
"That's kind of your problem," I said. "You don't know what you want to be. You want to be everything!"
"Uh-huh," Benjamin nodded fervently, and you could tell he was wondering if it really were possible to be everything all at once.
He was so set on being a ghost for so long. I don't know about your kids, but my kids start planning for next year's Halloween by November 1st (sometimes earlier) and Benjamin has been taking about being a ghost for months. Now that we're starting to feel pressed for time he's been changing his mind every two seconds.
Ghost.
Pirate.
Train.
Doctor.
Dalek.
Pumpkin.
Train tracks.
Princess Leia.
Cat.
Batman.
Superman.
Monster.
Skeleton.
Yoda.
Airplane.
LEGO.
Bed.
Tractor.
Apparently ghost is out because "they are sad and scary and I don't like 'em!"
Oh, but now he's found a piece of paper and is running around the house shouting, "This could be my nose for a ghost!"
But now he's decided to be a boat.
Oh, back to being train tracks.
That literally all happened in the past ten seconds.
I don't know how I'm supposed to get him to lock into a single idea. My rule for the girls has always been that once you make a choice you stick with it—I'm only helping to come up with one costume—but Benjamin's my only boy! Part of me wants to let him wear a different costume to every Halloween event we got to just so I can dress him up in so many cute ways because I'll have many more chances to dress up girls, but only a few to dress up my boy.

This is hilarious. And why Mal doesn't get a choice until at least next year. He gets to recycle Gareth's costumes from corresponding years. So this year he'll be Joker. If he really throws a fit about the face makeup maybe we'll see if he can squeeze into last year's monkey costume. Gareth is going easy on me this year and reusing his Mario costume from two years ago, which somehow just barely fits still. I'm surprised he didn't ask to be The Doctor or Harry Potter, but also grateful I didn't have to create a costume this year.
