We had another family party on New Year's Day, this time with some of the extended Heiss family so they could get the chance to see Emily, Morgan, and Gavin. This vacation was filled with family gatherings. I guess that's what you get when you don't come "home" for 2.5 years.
Here's Auntie Sarah with Gavin:
I did Miriam's hair in a braid that morning and Sarah was sitting beside her. "Looks like I'm next in line for getting my hair done!" she said, so I braided Sarah's hair, too. Miriam was excited to match Auntie Sarah!
In addition to the aunts and uncles, we had Grandma Pat and Dave, Grandpa Frank, and Great-aunt Nicki over.
After we ate lunch we brought out the birthday cake and sang to Gavin. This little boy loves music so much and can't help but dance when he hears any sort of beat. Hearing everyone sing happy birthday made him so happy!
He wasn't quite sure what to do with the candle, but quickly figured out the cake.
Here's Benjamin enjoying some cake between his Aunties Shayla and Sarah:
We had a relatively simple lunch—just sandwiches—but Grandma had spent hours frying potato pancakes for New Year's Eve's dinner (Emily's request) and had spent hours in the kitchen making fried burritos for Christmas Eve's dinner (Andrew's request) that she just didn't feel like cooking anything. And no one could blame her for that. And no one else wanted to cook anything either—we'd all been helping in the kitchen the day before (peeling potatoes and whatnot).
It was delicious and laid back and so nice of Grandma and Grandpa to host so that we could have a chance to see everyone!
