Douglas Michael

Rachel got another new cousin last night! Douglas Michael has joined the family. Diana's water broke at home but she didn't have any contractions for over an hour so was wondering if it really was her water breaking...they went into the hospital and the nurses confirmed that her water had indeed broken. They were admitted, she got an epidural around noon, the doctor showed up at 4:30, and Michael was here shortly after 5:00 PM.

He was a lot smaller than I was wagering: 7 lbs. 15 oz (the same weight as his cousin, Adam) and he was 20 inches...I think. I can't quite remember.

We went to go visit them today. Rachel was quite interested in him and kept pulling on his arms. We told her that she had to be gentle but she wasn't quite gentle enough for him, in my opinion. Diana was calm through the whole visit.

I was annoyed at her nurses though. Right when we got there the nurse said, "He has to eat now. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. It's now or never. Let them visit for five minutes and then he must eat."

Apparently he hasn't been eating very well and I understand that we needed to keep our visit short so that he could have the opportunity to try, but honestly, I'm kind of glad that my nurses weren't that strict about it. It's hard enough to relax when you're trying to learn to nurse without having someone breathing down your neck. My nurses weren't like that at all--they said that Rachel could go a few days without eating and it wouldn't harm her, at least not right in the beginning.

I hope Diana gets it! It's so tough in the beginning. I told her to give it a few months before it really feels comfortable. It took Rachel and me at least 3 months to feel like we knew what we were doing and the first little while was so hard. Uncomfortable and hard to keep the baby awake and strange and new. But well worth it.

Richard showed up shortly before we left, absolutely beaming and just in time to clean little Michael up from the gigantic spit-up/poopy that he did while Andrew was holding him.

Diana's comment about labor: It didn't hurt at all with the epidural.

She says that like it's easy!

  2. Sounds like that nurse wasn't very nice. I guess I lucked out because I had such wonderful nurses with both of my children. No complaints from me. I hope the mean nurse doesn't discourage her from nursing, it does take time and well worth it.

  3. Hey, thanks for recording Michael's birth story. It's nice to know someone is keeping track of all these details. :)

  4. Wow that is a very unflattering picture of me. So, I came back on here to find that video of Rachel playing peekaboo or getting scared with Andrew hitting the table and I can't remember where to find it. Something just reminded me of it and I want to see it again. Where is it?! Do you know what i"m talking about?
