The kids have been taking care of their own cat, of course, as well as the hermit crabs—which all had been on a deep dive under the sand, and only recently reemerged (much to Benjamin's relief).
Then there's Luna puppy, who the kids still take out for a romp three times a week. But Luna had a friend over last week so the kids were taking out two puppies (bliss for Phoebe).
And then Rachel has also been taking care of her former YW leader's cats the last couple of weeks as well. There are three of them: Simon, Xander, and Rose.
Last Tuesday as I was writing a list of things to do on the board before leaving for campus, Benjamin reminded me to put Luna up there, so I did.
"Oh! And the cats!" I said. "Miriam's going to have to give Simon his shot this evening because we won't be home in time for Rachel to do that."
Two things you should know: Rachel drives me to campus and Simon's care includes twice-daily injections. There are just so many things to know in the world.
So, I'm writing on the board...
▢ Luna (lunchtime walk)▢ Simon (next injection around 8:00)
And because I am me, I started singing while I was writing.
"Here comes Simon! Here comes Simon! Here comes Simon...my little funny bunny!" and so forth.
Zoë is the one who really liked that show, I think. I know we watched it in Spanish Fork. And I know we've watched it here. But it's been a few years since we've seen it. It's produced in Australia and is pretty cute. Australia has good TV, apparently. But, like I said, we haven't watched it in years. I don't think Alexander ever requested to watch it, although he surely watched a few episodes when Zoë was still into it.
Anyway, Rachel and I arrive on campus and I get a text message from Andrew.
"Alexander said something about having to take care of a neighbour's rabbit today. Whose rabbit? Why don't I know about this?"
I texted back and was like, "Weird. Nope. I don't know anything about this either."
And then it dawned on me...
"Oh! I was singing the theme song to Simon while I was writing on the board about Simon's injections. You know—'Here comes Simon! My little funny bunny!' Alexander must have assumed Simon was a bunny. Simon is not a bunny. He's just the cat."
It was a little sad for Alexander, who had been looking forward to meeting this rabbit he'd been imagining so much about (but pretty funny for the rest of us). I kept laughing about it all day.
Rachel and I would be working in my office (I have two desks in there; it's quite lovely...even if the plain cinderblock walls are a little...sterile-looking) and I would start snickering a little and Rachel would be like, "What? You're thinking about Simon again, aren't you?"
And, yes, I was. Every time!
